Written Notes

This Eden is much more decadent than ones in the past with mushroom and wet-earth undertones. Full-bodied, very tannic and powerful with lots of richness too. Needs time to come together. Try in 2022.

Dark and intense purple colour. Refined intense nose charms with lovely vanilla and jammy strawberry and cassis aromas. Full-bodied palate is very vibrant and intense with deliciously dense jammy dark fruits and balancing spicy toastiness. The tannins are super refined and smooth. The palate is in great balance and well-integrated. Long and lingering finish. What a charmer! Great to drink already but will keep well over a decade or two! If served now, decant for 4 hours and serve at 17-18°C with grilled venison and  black truffle risotto. JL 97p (12/2020)

Moving to the 2015s tasted from bottle, this is an incredible vintage for this estate and there are two perfect wines in the lineup. First up, the 2015 St. Eden, from a hillside of red volcanic soils near Oakville, boasts a saturated purple color and heavenly notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth, lead pencil shavings, and huge crushed rock-like minerality. It’s full-bodied, deep, and layered on the palate, with incredible concentration, yet it stays seamless, pure, and perfectly balanced. It’s a magical wine to drink over the coming 2-3 decades.

From the beginning of the year St. Eden showed the potential to ripen early. As the year weathered on, the maturity of the site became more and more fragmented along the slope. To address this the team harvested almost twenty distinct lots in order to capture each piece at its optimal moment. Additionally, whereas picking was compressed at other sites, here harvest was spread over more than two weeks.

The nose is uncharacteristically dark and brooding. The nuances of graphite and Provençal herbs are subtly intertwined. The classic duality between hedonic fruit and cool minerality is at play lending the wine both gravity and levity in the same moment. The tannins are rich and fleshy upfront, but as they linger the telltale silkiness of this wine is revealed.
