The Story

The power of the elements. Unique in character, Cos d’Estournel Blanc evokes the coolness of sea spray and salty sea winds whipping one’s face while also conjuring the warmth and richness of the land. A generous, lively wine, it brings to mind a slice of bread spread thickly with quince jam, a sun-drenched stall of autumn fruit or sudden recollections of the sweetest summer moments.

Vintage 2018

Report and recommendations for the 2018 Bordeaux vintage

by Andrew Caillard MW

2018 is an exceptional year. Bordeaux whites and Sauternes are very good, but from an Australian perspective, the excitement is all in the red wines. All sub-regions produced examples of very good wines, but some performed better than others. Generally, the largest estates have made exemplary wines illustrating that the human factor and wealth can have a major...

Written Notes

Not as impressive as when it tasted from the barrel in April 2019. Lighter and more elegant than in 2009 and 2013, with less marked acidity and shorter aftertaste.

A blend of two-thirds Sauvignon and one-third Sémillon that was brought up mostly in used barrels, the 2018 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc has a bright gold hue as well as outstanding notes of tart pineapple, white flowers, lemon zest, and white grapefruit. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, bright, racy white with plenty of texture and richness, a notable sense of chalky minerality, and a great finish. This stunning white will keep for 10-15 years.

  • 95p

67% Sauvigon Blanc, 33% Sémillon. Barrel sample.
More subdued on the nose than the white Pagodes but a little more complex: touch of creamy oak and spice and fresh grapefruit but also a richer note from the Sémillon. On the palate, tense and fresh, moderate intensity with clean-cut citrus and a dry, lightly grippy texture. Long and serious, direct, freshness over concentration. (JH)

  • 88p

Bright yellow colour with green hue. Aromatic nose with typical Semillon character, restrained ripe fruit reminiscent of apricots, ripe pears, hints of candied lemon peel, excellent complexity with minerality. On the palate juicy fruit, restrained fruit, complex approach with depth and excellent length.
