International Wine Cellar - Stephen Tanzer - May 2008

91-93 points "Good medium red-ruby. Musky aromas of dark fruits, smoky herbs, pepper, menthol and game. Then surprisingly sweet on entry before turning masculine and broad-shouldered in the middle, with impressive volume. Serious, smoky, soil-driven flavors of dark fruits, menthol and minerals. The solid tannins saturate the front teeth and the sides of the mouth"

The Story

The call of faraway lands. As mysterious and intriguing as a lone adventurer returning from a solitary sail, Cos d’Estournel is slow to reveal itself. Little by little, it evokes stories of distant places, market stalls brimming with unfamiliar fruits, spices and wares, village festivities warmed by the joy of revelers and the setting sun, and sumptuous visions of ladies and their voluptuous curves. A myriad of scents, colors and tastes appeal...

Written Notes

Damp and humid weather conditions in Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon came through these in a much better way than Merlot. Cos is the typical Cabernet Sauvignon wine with power, strong backbone, minerality, acidity, vibrancy, big tannin and meaty finish. It’s still very youthful and needs a couple of decades to mature.

  • 94p

Intense aromas of currant bush and berries that turn to roses. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a floral, leafy and fruity aftertaste. Builds on the palate. Needs time.

  • 93p

Dark ruby, very young, some stable hints in the back, lots of blackcurrants and some herbs and slightly green notes. I would have liked some more acidity, and the tannins are almost monumental. Sweetish fruit, ok finish.
