The Story

The Gruaud Larose terroir is truly remarkable and unique. It is a single vineyard of 80 hectares with gravels from the Gironde estuary, dating from the Mindel Ist and Mindel IInd (about 700 000 years ago), and that in some places are over 18 feet deep. The soil is very poor and sandy, and therefore does not hold water. Drainage is one of the major concerns of a conscientious vine-grower.

Vintage 1971

Bordeaux: 1971 was a very good vintage, the only fault of which was being overshadowed by the exceptional 1970 vintage. The size of the 1971 vintage harvest was very small, which made the wines a rarity. Well-stored examples of wine are likely to remain mature for a few more years. Sauternes and Barsac: Sweet wines such as Sauternes and Barsac have been exceptional this year and will last for many decades to come.

Written Notes

Excellent level; decanted only five minutes before tasting. Pale and light, almost youthful colour. Still has some sparkle left. Sweet, fruity, and fresh nose dominated by honey and exotic fruit and raisins. Sweet and one of the richest champagnes I ever tasted. It has amazingly good balance and structure. Not too sweet, even though the Heidsieck Gout American style had a relatively high sugar dosage. Surpsingly long and pleasing wine, which moved smoothly and easily down the throat, leaving a most memorable and historic aftertaste.
