The Story

The Gruaud Larose terroir is truly remarkable and unique. It is a single vineyard of 80 hectares with gravels from the Gironde estuary, dating from the Mindel Ist and Mindel IInd (about 700 000 years ago), and that in some places are over 18 feet deep. The soil is very poor and sandy, and therefore does not hold water. Vintage 2016

Bordeaux 2016 in review “A paradox”

by Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st century. I haven't been this excited about the prospects of wines this young since the remarkable 2009 and 2010 vintages. Written Notes

Showy, with layers of warmed fig, roasted mesquite, black tea, incense and Turkish coffee notes, followed by waves of lush cassis, blackberry and raspberry confiture flavors. This has a graphite grounding rod, a tarry spine and riveting licorice snap details to keep it driving along. A head-turner for sure.

Tasted in November 2021.  69% C. Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 2% C. Franc. 13.02% alcohol. Minty, some blackcurrants, Lush berries and silky tannins on the palate. Elegant and finesse, delicate balance, refined and very distinguished St.Julien wine.

Ruby. Deeper nose, cassis. Vanilla, coffee, blackberries and blueberries nose, scented yet tight. Among the tightest this primeur. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins. Fresh, fruity, darker berries, spices, detailed, nuanced, long. 94-96

  • 95p

Medium deep colour. Fresh mulberry, cassis toasty roasted nut aromas with hints of sage. Generous and supple with fresh ripe pure dark fruits, almost velvety textures, juicy notes and lovely vanilla oak complexity. Tannins build up slinky and the acidity carries the whole shebang across the palate. Very impressive wine. Tasted at the Union des Grand Crus. 96 points

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Concentrated but closed character, slowly revealing aroma reminiscent of blackberries, black cherries and mild spices. On the palate well structured with fine acidity, ripe tannins and good length. 94
