The Story

The Gruaud Larose terroir is truly remarkable and unique. It is a single vineyard of 80 hectares with gravels from the Gironde estuary, dating from the Mindel Ist and Mindel IInd (about 700 000 years ago), and that in some places are over 18 feet deep. The soil is very poor and sandy, and therefore does not hold water. Drainage is one of the major concerns of a conscientious vine-grower.

Vintage 1988

The first of a trio of great vintages and which was rather overshadowed by the 89s and 90s. Certainly the most "classic" of the trio, with many wines which are not overtly fruit-focused, but which have levels of extract and concentration which make them perfect candidates for prolonged storage.

1988 Château Gruaud Larose
Ruby, garnet rim. Some minerals, dates, figs, light tobacco and cedar, just a whiff, still some faint dark fruits core on the nose. Mature. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dates, figs, some blackberries and blackcurrants, leather, tobacco, elegant texture, tannins are still here but getting softer, long finish. 94
