Winemaker notes from Allison Tauziet
The 2006 IX Estate Red exhibits a beautiful red ruby color. First impressions on the nose reveal a wine that leaps out of the glass. Aromas of smoked meats, barbecue spice, juniper berry and sage greet the senses. As it continues to unwind, soft feminine aromas of lavender, tangerine, talc and spring flowers take over. When the wine truly hits its stride, secondary notes of graphite and crushed rocks flirt...

The Story

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, IX Estate Napa Valley Red is distinguished by complex fruit interplays, a luscious nose of rustic herbs, iron, clay and black fruits, huge layers of flavor and supple, sweet tannins impeccably well-balanced. The number IX refers to the parcel number and is also significant as the date Ann and Joe were married: 9/9. The 2002 vintage was the first, of four vintages, from thi...

Wine Information

The 2006 vintage began a bit slower than the average year. With a wetter winter, soils took longer to dry out, and vines began to wake up in April, several weeks later than usual. By early June, vines were making up time thanks to a beautifully moderate spring. A heat wave in July helped signal to the vines that summer had arrived, telling them to slow their growth, and begin the focus on ripening their fruit. A beautiful summer followed, and ...

Written Notes

(66% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 8% cab franc and 5% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Exhilarating nose of wild berries, wild sage, bay laurel and flowers. Wonderfully dense and sweet, but with an extraordinary light touch to the black fruit, floral and spice flavors. A terrific core of ripe acidity gives the wine outstanding inner-mouth lift and extends the finish, which builds inexorably. The tannins are firm but fine-grained. The best vintage to date for the winery's estate vineyard overlooking Lake Hennessey, which was planted in 2000. In fact, this is extraordinary for five-year-old vines.

Very attractive aromatics with lovely acidity and freshness on the palate. Lifted flavors of mocha, blackberry and black plum; there are layers of savory notes like earth, minerals and roasted herb. Complex, generous and long - a fabulous vintage for Colgin. 2006 was similar to the 2005 in the growing period - both were cool seasons.

The 2006 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a softer style, but is extremely exuberant and opulent, in almost complete contrast to the Cariad. The wine has remarkable creme de cassis notes intermixed with crushed rocks, acacia flowers, tobacco leaf, licorice, and smoke. It is a meaty, medium to full-bodied wine with gorgeous opulence, purity, and some nice chocolatey, black currant flavors. Light on its feet for a wine of such intensity and richness, I wouldn’t be surprised if the tannins re-emerge once in bottle, with the wine evolving for 20-30+ years. RP

The 2006 "IX Estate" exhibits a beautiful red ruby color. First impressions on the nose reveal a wine that leaps out of the glass. Aromas of smoked meats, barbecue spice, juniper berry and sage greet the senses. As it continues to unwind, soft feminine aromas of lavender, tangerine, talc and spring flowers take over. When the wine truly hits its stride, secondary notes of graphite and crushed rocks flirt in and out of the nose. The wine is rich in purity yet full of complexity. Supple, round tannins coat the palate, with a lingering silky texture. Soft yet powerful, the 2006 "IX Estate" displays hallmarks of the Colgin style more so than ever before. This wine was aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels, and was racked just before blending and bottled in July 2008. The 2006 "IX Estate" will drink well near term, and will continue to age for 20 or more years.

Inside Information

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From the Pritchard Hill Vineyard, the 2006 IX Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The good news is that there are 1,500 cases of this cuvee. It, too, reveals the noble sweetness of tannin, the extraordinary rich, intense mouthfeel, and sumptuous aromas of flowers, burning embers, blackberries, blueberries, spice box, and cedar. With extraordinary intensity, beautiful purity, a texture and flavors that build incrementally on the palate, and a significantly long finish, this is a perfect wine.
