Pink hue with slightly coppery tints.Dynamic bubbles forming a lingering bead.Pure, precise and dazzling bouquet. The intense Pinot noir aromas take us back to the harvest time with its pure, ripe and concentrated fruit: zesty red berries (red currants, wild raspberries, blackcurrants) and raspberry liqueur. Then come sweet spice and smoky notes with a hint of reduction (smoky, spicy) from the Pinot noir with its notes of undergrowth.

The Story

Cristal Rosé was first born a hundred years after the original Cristal, in 1974. It is an intriguing and particular prestige cuvée rosé, as it has the palest colour, yet a contrastingly fleshy, fruity, well-built palate of amazing freshness. Its secret is in the 60 per cent Pinot Noir from two hectares of Roederer’s own old-vine vineyards in Aÿ, Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and La Côte du Moulin, which are now cultivated according to biodynamic princ...

Wine Information

A “weather waltz”, and one with clear, sharp contrasts! The spring was sunny and dry and ended with a heatwave in June; summer was autumnal, cool and rainy; September was hot, sunny and very dry... weather we would usually associate with the month of August. The ‘key’ to the vintage lay in the soils as well as in the work carried out by the winegrowers. The good drainage properties of the chalk on the lower-middle part of the hillside helped u...

Vintage 2014

This year was all about alternating weather patterns. A particularly wet winter gave way to a warm and dry spring. May saw some rain, and even though late June-brought about a minor heatwave, the remainder of the summer was moist and murky. Disease pressure was lifted but once again fine, hot September weather was able to save and concentrate the crop. A large crop (11,553 kg/ha) was picked from September 8th onwards. The year's biggest proble...

Written Notes

An exquisite pale salmon-pink hue with delicate copper undertones, shimmering with brilliance. The fine, persistent bubbles rise in an elegant stream, forming a refined and creamy mousse.

The nose is beautifully complex and inviting, unveiling layers of red fruit and floral notes. Wild strawberries, red currants, and raspberries lead the way, complemented by hints of blood orange and pink grapefruit zest. As the wine breathes, nuances of rose petals, white tea, and almond blossom emerge, underscored by a subtle minerality and a touch of pastry cream.

The palate is a masterpiece of balance, showcasing the hallmark elegance of Cristal Rosé. It opens with a vibrant attack of red berries and citrus, harmonized by a silky texture and remarkable depth. The mid-palate evolves into layers of stone fruits, including ripe peach and apricot, mingled with notes of toasted hazelnuts and delicate spices. A chalky, saline minerality adds precision and complexity, carrying through to a long, seamless finish with whispers of candied ginger, pink peppercorn, and a touch of vanilla.

This is a wine of impeccable structure, combining crystalline freshness with a rich, creamy texture. The meticulous blending of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is evident in its balance of power and finesse. Its taut acidity and refined effervescence provide vibrancy, while the wine’s layered complexity suggests significant ageing potential.

An exceptional gastronomic champagne, Cristal Rosé 2014 pairs beautifully with fine cuisine. Consider dishes like poached lobster with a citrus beurre blanc, duck breast with a red berry reduction, or a creamy burrata with heirloom tomatoes and balsamic glaze. For dessert, a fresh raspberry pavlova or a delicate almond financier would be sublime.

The Roederer Cristal Rosé 2014 is a stunning example of vintage rosé champagne, reflecting the exceptional quality of the 2014 harvest. Its combination of elegance, depth, and precision makes it a true connoisseur’s choice. While it is already mesmerizing in its youth, this wine promises even greater heights with further cellaring.

“The 2014 vintage of Cristal Rosé is a pure and vivacious delight. It comes with attractive, exuberant fruit, that is open and accessible upon launch. Despite its fruity richness the overall impression is of cool and crunchy fruit. Wild strawberries, sweet peach and red currants. I am loving the smoky-toasty layer bringing reservedness and a notion of minerality. On the palate it is dancingly vibrant, saline and comes with an inviting easiness and deliciousness to it. A vintage ready to charm and… keep on charming. ”

The 2014 was a very cold year. The wine is made from 55% Pinot Noir from the "Musigny of Champagne " site in Aÿ – chalky La Villers Cru . 45% Chardonnay comes from Avize. The vines are 60-80 years old. The dosage of 8 g/L. 19% of the base wine was vinified in oak barrels. No malolactic fermentation.

Light, onion skin and peach skin colour. Refined and elegant nose with hints of mintiness, gentle toastiness and sugar-glazed orange peel. Dry and crisp palate shows broad and cool mineral freshness with some citrus. Very crisp and lean. Long lingering aftertaste is scented by fresh first harvest strawberries. – JL 95p (April 2024)
