The Story

Of all the villages of the Côte de Nuits, Morey-Saint-Denis is one of the most fruitful in terms of the number of its Grands Crus. The Clos de Tart, which remains a solely-held entity, was founded by the Cistercians of Tart in 1141. Written Notes

The 1942 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was poured alongside the 1943 and is easily the better of the two. It has a pale core with an amber rim. The palate is vivacious and eager to please, which comes as a real surprise after 76 years. There is just a light chlorine/swimming pool scent that I find in a lot of wartime wines. The medium-bodied palate offers a sweet core of decayed red fruit tinged with orange zest. It lacks real grace and class but seems to improve with aeration rather than oxidize, and leaves lovely traces of nectarine and strawberry laced with cedar on the finish. Outstanding considering the conditions it was made under, but also outstanding in terms of just the wine itself! Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.
