The Story

Sourced from select hillside estates, the Cabernet Sauvignon wines of BOND vividly demonstrate the range of Napa Valley's finest terroirs. From the more than eighty vineyards we have worked with over the past quarter century, we have slowly and vigilantly selected five sites. Written Notes

The 2021 vintage in Napa Valley is widely heralded as exceptional, particularly for hillside and benchland sites. A dry winter and warm-growing season produced small, thick-skinned berries with naturally high concentration. Yet crucially for 2021, the absence of extreme heat spikes allowed grapes to retain freshness, aromatic purity, and ideal phenolic ripeness. Yields were significantly reduced, but quality was outstanding—vibrant acidity, precision, and beautifully refined tannins.

For BOND’s St. Eden—perched on Oakville’s volcanic knolls—2021 delivered a wine of tension, purity, and mineral authority, among the most vivid and focused expressions of this terroir in the past decade.

The St. Eden 2021 is a masterclass in precision and site expression—powerful, polished, and mineral-driven, with a verticality that defines this fabled Oakville benchland plot. The nose opens with cassis, blackberry, and black plum, wrapped in an energetic lift of violet, dried lavender, and crushed rosemary. Beneath the fruit lies a profound volcanic core—graphite, warm ash, black stone, and iron filings—signature markers of St. Eden’s red, rocky soils. Subtle tones of tobacco leaf, dark cocoa, and sandalwood add depth as the wine breathes.

On the palate, the wine is tense, architectural, and impeccably focused, showing the hallmark 2021 balance between concentration and freshness. The tannins are ultra-fine yet authoritative, forming a precise lattice around a concentrated core of cassis, boysenberry, and plum skin. A vibrant, crystalline acidity propels the wine forward, while layers of cedar, licorice, black tea, and scorched earth unfurl across the mid-palate. The finish is long, resonant, and mineral-laced, radiating purity and quiet power long after the last sip.

This is a stunning St. Eden—profoundly pure, structured, and terroir-transparent, capturing the brilliance of the 2021 vintage in full. While already mesmerizing in its youthful intensity, it will evolve majestically over the next 20–30+ years, revealing ever deeper layers of complexity and finesse.
