The Story

Conterno’s Monfortino is a heavyweight contender for the best Barolo around, and it definitely has our vote. It’s a matchless experience of power paired with subtlety and the effect is quite seductive. As it opens, you’ll experience classic hints of rose, earthy black truffles, cigar box, and anise in a boldly structured wine that’s still quite fresh.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous said it’s a “magnificent” wine that “explodes from the glass with a luxurious, expansive personality that leaves me speechless.” The lucky people who share this bottle with you likely will never forget it.

Monfortino is the very first Barolo made in what has come to be known as the classic style. Earlier Barolos were generally sold in either cask or demijohn, and meant for early drinking. Giacomo decided to create a Barolo with great aging potential. His first wine wine was a 120 Barolo Riserva, and he soon adopted the name Monfortino in honor of his home village Montorte d'Alba.
In 1959 Giovanni Conterno began making the wine at his family domaine, taking over from his father Giacomo. The legendary Barolos he made in 1964, 1971, 1978, 1985 and 1990 have left their mark in Italian wine history.

was so ripe, similar to the 1979 because of its accessibility. It had lots of potential, but I preferred the style of 1996 to 1997. Roberto liked the 1997 a bit more, his father the 1996, and his mother? 'The Barbera!' he joked. He continued that neither he nor is father are making a mistake. We will see how the 1997 stands the test of time

Imported by MacArthur Liquors. Alcohol 14%.  The flavors are of lighter berries and almost roast earth.  The wine remains firm with fine, strong tannins.  There is structure to last but the flavor concentration does not seem to be there. **** Now – 2026.

Ruby with brick rim. How seductive! Beautiful youthful nose, fantastic elegance, truffles, coffee, red berries, cherries, Belgian chocolates, perfumed and roses. The balance is out of this world, fantastic acidity and ripe tannins in the back ground, intense and complex and still extremely elegant and a long finish. 95

D 6 h / G 3.5 h Moderately intense, brick red colour. Very intense, blueberry nose, hints of smoke, tar, and rubber – reminding of Côte-Rôtie!! Very gentle, round and concentrated taste with velvety tannins and moderate acidity. Less vivid in style, but velvety and opulent wine showing less lingering style. Dark chocolate with clove flavours in the finish. Rich and round, gentle and full-bodied. Drinking well now but will keep another 10 to 15 years.
