The Story

Polish Hill Vineyard – established in 1966 - is named after the nearby Hill River Settlement established by Polish immigrants in the 1840s. The fully mature low vigour vines are planted on a U-shaped ridge formation on poor shaley slightly acidic soils with underlying slate and a topsoil crust of clay interspersed with shale. Vintage takes place in early April - normally a few weeks later than Watervale. The free-run juice is cold settled for four days before being yeasted and fermented in closed stainless steel fermenters. The wines have incredible perfume and fruit purity, the lime/floral fruit profile balanced by a fine cut of acidity. This long-lived beautifully aromatic and concentrated wine does much to define great Clare Valley Riesling.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

Colour: Gin clear. Almost water. Nose: Intense limes, spices, the pith from a grapefruit. Palate: There is a thrilling vibrancy to this wine. Great intensity but impeccable balance. Paper cut acidity. Tight and elegant. Finish: Balanced, and very, very long. In a nutshell: Put a case or two in the cellar to make your grand-kids very happy, indeed. When to drink: A joy to experience the intensity, freshness and focus of this wine now but, well cellared, it will be drinking superbly for decades to come. Food pairing: The freshest oysters. Inside information: The 32nd vintage of this iconic wine. Jeff Grosset has described making Riesling as “the purest form of winemaking”. This is compelling evidence of that. Free run juice only. Final Verdict: Not that easy to find world class wines under $50 but this is one. What a wine! And what an incredible bargain.
