Every year in Champagne non-vintage blends are created using wines of the same vintage from many different parcels, to which are added the vins de réserve, wines from previous vintages which have been kept in caves for several years. At Jacquesson, we believe that what matters is that the best of each harvest is accentuated and celebrated, rather than denying that one year is different to the next. Thus, we number our Cuvées, to date them and to highlight the distinct personality of each Cuvée.
In 2009 we experienced a very cold and dry winter. Spring was mild and we suffered no frost but did have a lot of rain which meant a considerable amount of mildew. Thankfully, this was followed by a summer that was warm and dry, indeed at times very hot, and the weather at the end of the growing season was wonderful, allowing us to hope for a great vintage.
Our grapes were picked in perfect condition, with levels of maturity comparable to 2002; the acidity was lower than 2008 but certainly high enough to allow the potential for long ageing.
Our tastings of the vins clairs in the following spring confirmed the potential of the new musts the previous year. The Chardonnays were rich and structured, the Pinots Noirs full and long while the Pinots Meuniers were really exceptional with lots of precision and fruit. 2009 was, indeed, the great vintage we had hoped for, allying ripeness and precision. The wines were vinified in casks, on the lees, with regular bâtonnage and were blended to produce Cuvée n° 737.
2009 provides the backbone of the Cuvée; the reserve wines, comprising 30% of the final blend, come mainly from the great 2008 vintage to which we added some wines from the Cuvées n° 735 and 736 which we have kept back specially for this purpose. With Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs, and Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers in the Grande Vallée de la Marne, our Cuvée consists entirely of Grands and Premiers Crus.
