Viinin Kuvailu
The Story
Scrio was born in 1994, out of Eugenio Campolmi's wish to produce a wine which would best express his vision of Syrah, his favorite grape variety.
As all Le Macchiole wines, Scrio has an original personality and it is one of the very few Syrah wines produced in Bolgheri that stands out differendy from French Syrahs.
It is a very limited production of 5,000 bottles, the result of a painstaking selection of the best bunches harvested in our vineyards year after year.
"Scrio" is a Tuscan word that translates as pure, genuine, honest. It is usually used to refer to people who are pure of heart.
Scrio is sourced from two vineyards: Puntone and Madonnina, from extremely restricted yields due to low vigor plants and green harvesting. Following a 20-day maceration in stainless steel, Scrio is matured for 12 months in oak barrels (75% new, 25% second passage). It is then aged for 21 months in bottle before release. Around 5,000 bottles produced are produced in a given vintage.
Vuosikerta 1998
Italy/Barolo/Barbaresco/Excellent to Exceptional – A vastly underrated vintage, 1998 had the misfortune of being sandwiched between 1997 (a vintage that was overrated) and the stellar 1999. 1998 offers everything you want in a manual Barolo or Barbaresco – nice concentration, firm tannins and precise acidity. In fact, it is the acidity of these wines that, in my opinion, carries these wines, keeping a wonderful freshness and elegance to these wines. This is not the most concentrated vintage of the last decade (1999, 2001 and 2004 produced much more powerful wines), but there is admirable depth of fruit and great balance and finesse. Most of the best Barbaresco bottlings as well as many 1998 Barolos drink beautifully now, while some of the best Barolos will provide another 10-12 years of enjoyment.
