The Story

Paleo Rosso has been called Italy’s landmark expression of Cabernet Franc. This grape variety is growing internationally as a distinct bottling, but Bolgheri has proven to be the single best place in the world to do so. The Mediterranean climate and surroundings result in a wine of extraordinarily expressive, sensual, and textural fruits and savory spices.

Paleo Rosso is sourced from four of the estate’s five vineyards: Casa Nuova, Vignone and Madonnina. Vines are planted in two training systems, Double cordon and single guyot.

The 100% Cabernet Franc is macerated and fermented for 20 days in concrete tanks, and subsequently aged for 20 months in oak barrels with 75% new and 25% second passage. The wine is fruther aged in bottle for 16 months before release.

Written Notes

Upon release, the ’06 Paleo Rosso was a powerful, lush, and captivating wine that flooded the palate with fruits, piqued the cheeks with tannins, and energized its lingering finish with acidity. More than a decade later, this wine is showing its mellow side, complementing its brooding berries with notes of melted chocolate, peppery spices, pencil lead, and loam, as tertiary notes of black tea, tar and saddle leather tease the palate. Caressing yet vibrant, the ’06 Paleo Rosso retains its fresh acidity even as its chewy tannins have subdued somewhat--it’s a gorgeously mature Super Tuscan! While Paleo Rosso was once a blend, in 2001 Le Macchiole made the wine a mono-varietal Cabernet Franc, and Paleo Rosso sees about fourteen months of aging in barriques, making it an ideal bridge between Italian and international winemaking.

Promising but too young to get the full pleasure! If enjoyed now serve at 17C, well-decanted (10 hours) and serve with medium-rare Entrecôte or truffle-flavoured wild boar pasta with good dose of 30 months aged Parmigiano. 2006 vintage in Tuscany is a killer especially for Bordeaux varietals! Le Macchiole's 100% Cab Franc, Paleo Rosso, was another proof of that. Like Caberlot 2006 this wine shows such a great concentration, power and elegance. It takes still its time in the bottle as it will bloom somewhere around 2025 to 2030! If served now, decant at least 10 hours in advance and serve it with medium rare Rib Eye!
