The Story

Messorio is our personal interpretation of one of the grape varieties most commonly grown in the Bolgheri area: Merlot.
Though grown on the estate since the first year of production, Merlot was made into a single varietal wine after many years, in a limited production of 300 bottles of vintage 1994.

We have two vineyards planted with Merlot grapes: Puntone, planted in 1993, and Vignone, planted in 1999, both of them featuring excellent pedoclimatic characteristics, including a good percentage of clay and sand, which allow for wines of great complexity and finesse.

Each vineyard gives different wine styles: Merlot grapes from the Puntone vineyard give wines with fresh aromas and elegant tannins, backed by acidity which lends the wine a more vertical style; the wines produced from the Vignone vineyard are, instead, more complex, with intense fruity notes and a more structured tannic texture, supported by excellent minerality.

The name Messorio has ancient origins. It refers to the ancient Tuscan practice of wheat harvesting. We chose it because harvesting has always been the most important time of the year in the countryside: once it meant wheat, now, to us, it is all about grapes.

Wine Information

There is no question that the 2014 was challenging for all Italian wineries and Bolgheri was no different: rainfall, changeable weather and constant lack of sun adversely affected the harvest like rarely before. It was a vintage that required hard work and commitment, allowing those who worked carefully, accurately and with passion to make the difference. At Le Macchiole, a lot of time and hard work was put into protecting the grapes through constant canopy management to lighten the foliage, and allow for more sunlight and warmth to receive the grapes. Despite the challenges, the winery is quite please with the results: grape yield was lower than usual, but fruit quality was amazing.

Written Notes

Medium intense ruby red colour. Open nose is aromatic with floral and wild red fruit notes. Medium-bodied palate is vivid with red fruits, plums, cherries and touch of spices. Linear finish with gently drying tannins and red fruits flavours. Drinking well already, but will benefit from further cellaring another 5-7 years. Decant now for 2 hours and serve at 17-18C with beef ragu, hard cheeses and roasted chicken. – JL 93p (11/2018)

Inside Information

A Merlot wine featuring good acidity and great aromatic freshness, as a result of light extraction and delicate maceration. Red fruity aromas and sweet spicy notes on the nose. Amazing on the palate owing to the freshness given by the great acidity and considerable savoriness counterbalanced by soft tannins.
