Slightly lower yields in our old Malbec blocks, combined with an incredibly precise Cabernet vintage has seen the portion of Malbec reduced slightly this year. All blocks were destemmed only, without crushing and then allowed to ferment naturally. The Petit Verdot, a small section of Malbec and small portion of Cabernet (making up 24%) were open fermented, hand plunged and pressed dry. The remaining 76% of the Cabernet and Malbec was static-fermented, gently pumped over through a splash tub and then left on skins for up to 34 days; allowing the wine to stabilise and become structurally sound in such a brilliant year for tannin ripeness. The small sections were basket pressed to fine French oak and matured for 18 months with minimal racking.

The Story

The refurbished icon wine Tom Cullity 2013 from Vasse Felix was launched in Spring 2017. Before 2013 the icon red wine of Vasse Felix was called Heytesbury. The blend is the same Cabernet-Malbec but Tom Cullity is a single-vineyard wine unlike its predecessor.

Vasse Felix, Margaret River's founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. Among his first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec vines, from which he produced the estate’s first red wine. The Tom Cullity descends from these original vines and represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix.

Wine Information

Another text-book vintage in Margaret River with consistent, almost rhythmic temperature patterns throughout the ripening season, resulting in excellent balance and physiological ripeness of fruit. Reasonable yields were obtained despite a handful of blocks being exposed to heavy storms in spring reducing their cropping potential, but overall quality is excellent.

Light maroon with a purple tinge. NOSE A very pointed and pristine perfume with immense complexity. Lively fruit from this vintage is preserved precisely. The oak and savoury complexity is intricately interwoven yet the immense power of the fruit, while delicate, is brimming with character. Notes of red currant, cranberry jam and raspberry pips give way to agar, gravel, a hint of peppermint tree, mushroom and bark. PALATE The palate is vibrant with mouth-watering cranberry freshness and while light, is juicy, precise and balanced with remarkable fine grained tannins. Long cassis and cherry pip flavoured tannins create a dry and fine finish. A significant Cabernet of uniquely delicate proportions.

2014 Vasse Felix Tom Cullity, Margaret River 99 points / “The red fruits shine here.  This is incredible. Raspberry, pomegranate, red apple skins, pink peppercorns, hints of strawberry, blackcurrant, mulberry, seaweed/nori (an injection of iodine, beetroot).  The tannins are polished, like whipped egg white: chewy and sumptuous.  The flavours extend through the palate and into the length.  Very very long.  I can write long after it is gone.  Alive.  Energy.  Doesn’t want to finish, it doesn’t want to let go.  It lingers.  Great depth of flavour.  Effortlessly long.  In fact… it needs the extra linger time just to make sure its covered all of its flavours and textures.  Super fine, powerful, long, structured and delicate.  Perfect.”

If this represents where Margaret River has come to, then we are indeed in a magnificent place.

To put this into perspective: Margaret River vintage charts are pretty bland – the range is very good to exceptional.  There are ‘typical’ years, ‘plush’ years’, ‘leaner’ years, ‘warmer’ years… but they’re all good.  They all age prodigiously.  The 86’s are still alive and kicking: not bad for a wine region which at the time, was trailblazing towards a brave new wine world.  In 2017, Margaret River celebrated its 50th year, and along with it, Vasse Felix, it’s 50th vintage.  2018 sees the release of the 2014 Tom Cullity.  Perhaps one of the best cabernets to come out of Australia. Perfect.  99 points (or 19.5pts).

Good looking normal size bottle, in an perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is ruby red, and looking healthy, bright and deep. On the nose it is intense, refined and generous. The taste is ripe, focused, perfumed, fragrant, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, full-bodied, with satin texture, well-structured, concentrated structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has voluptuous, viscous, truffles, new-oak, vanilla, dried-fruit, toasty, licorice and blackcurrant flavours. The finish is medium long, extensive, gentle and pure. This wine is intelligent, transparent and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 2h before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Dr Tom Cullity was a respected Cardiologist from Western Australia. He discovered the great table wines of Europe in the 1950s while in Britain working at the National Heart Hospital. Upon returning home, Tom set himself a mission to make fine wines in WA. He searched extensively for the perfect plot of land, taking guidance from the research of Professor Harold Olmo (1955) and Dr John Gladstones (1965) before establishing an 8 acre vineyard in Cowaramup called Vasse Felix.

His exhaustive work and persistence led to the successful creation of Margaret River’s first commercial wines. He is remembered for his pioneering role in establishing Margaret River.

Welcome to the Tastingbook, the world's first intelligent wine-tasting tool and social wine community.

It is easy and fast to use, and I am happy to guide you through it.


1. Start by Signing up and creating your profile

- Add a profile picture and more information about yourselves


2. Next, Create your personal Wine World

- Click iFollow (Discover) from the top menu

- Tastingbook has added automatically into your wine world 5-10 of the most active professionals or Pro's as we call them.

- Search for more pros or other users by typing their name in the search field. Then click into my world to those who you want to include in your wine world. This way, you may be notified when they taste wines or comment on them.

- You can also add wines and wine producers into your wine world. This allows you to access the most up-to-date information about them.


3. Invite your friends to join the tastingbook

- Click your username on the top menu and choose invite

- Type your friends email addresses and click send invites

- You can follow the status of your invitation on the same page


4. Create a tasting and do tasting notes

4.1. Click the New tasting button from the top menu.

- Name the tasting as you wish.

- Set the place and time (You can also add your past tasting notes by just changing the date)

- Click the add new wine button on the right to add new wines to the tasting.

- Now go to the box that says 'Click to add the wine'.

- Start by typing the wine or producer name and select the wine from the list that appears.

- After you have selected the wine, the vintage selection will be opened automatically

- Select the correct vintage by clicking on it.


4.2. Next, click My tasting note box and the worlds most advanced tasting

- From the bottom left of the tasting tool you can select in which language you want to use and view tasting notes.

- just do your wine note by clicking the correct adjectives. The adjectives can be activated by clicking once, or de-activated by clicking again.

- Tastingbook Pros will teach you while you taste wines.

At the bottom of the page in the section Show notes of, you may view notes of the professionals by clicking Pro's. If any of the tastingbook pros have tasted the wine before their opinion will show in the gold colored frames around the adjectives on the tasting view.


4.3. After you have completed your wine note, it's time to give Tb points.

Click the box on the bottom right Give points.
In case you want to add any comment or personal thoughts related to this wine, you may tick the note box next to the scores. In this field you may add copy-pasted texts for instance your old notes, etc.


4.4. After you've completed your notes for all the wines, click Close tasting.

You may now share some general thoughts about the tasting or tasted wines and choose with whom you want share your tasting. Set the Tasting privacy to limit the audience who are able to view your tastings information. We suggest you use Everyone as most of the wine experiences are meant to be shared.

Note:

If a wine that you are tasting is not found in our database, please be kind enough to send us an email to: addwine@thetastingbook.com, please include at least the wine name and producer. We will add the wine in tastingbook within 24 hours.


5. Tastingbook is full of information and stories - how to find them.

Tastingbook is full of information about wines, vintages, and wineries and also has over 30.000 pictures of wines. To best way to find what you are looking for is to browse the site from the Browse field in the top right corner.

You may search for wine, vintage, producer, pros or other community members by typing the name in the browse field. You may then choose from the drop down menu.



If you have any difficulty in navigating the site you may easily get help by clicking the support button on the left side of the page
