Written Notes

The 2020 vintage in Napa Valley was characterized by arid conditions and lower-than-average rainfall, which encouraged grapes to concentrate flavors and phenolics rather than simple ripeness. At the Melbury vineyard—a compact clay-rich hillside site above Lake Hennessey—the dry year fostered an expression of definition and aromatic clarity, with vivid scents of red fruit and floral elements emerging alongside fine tannins and bright acidity rather than overt power.

Appearance: Deep garnet with purple hues; intense youthful coloration and a dense, full-bodied stance.

Nose: Perfumed and elegantly layered. Aromas of red roses and forest floor, plum and bark accentuate the wine’s classically perfumed profile. Secondary notes include subtle violet, camphor, and cedar nuances, offering both finesse and intrigue.

Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and finely textured. The palate delivers a compelling core of cassis, red cherry, and pomegranate, enlivened by bright acids. Tannins are very fine-grained, lending structure without weight, while layers of spice (e.g., Indian curry and cardamom) and mineral undertones provide complexity and depth.

Finish: Long, clean, and persistent—marked by berry, citrus zest, and a refined mineral-savory echo that lingers with poise.

Overall: A sophisticated and expressive expression of Melbury’s clay-driven terroir—defined by aromatic intensity, lifted floral accents, and elegant structure. Though forward-looking, the wine’s restraint and fine tannin profile ensure longevity and continued evolution in the cellar.

Serving: 16–18 °C. Decant 60–120 min recommended in youth to broaden aromatics and soften tannins.

Pairing: Grilled lamb with herb jus, roast duck breast, dry-aged beef, pepper-crusted venison, or nuanced mushroom dishes.

Drinking Window (estimate): 2027–2045+ — built for the long haul but already showing compelling aromatic complexity.

So perfumed with red roses and forest floor, plums and bark. Complex. Full- to medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a tangerine, orange zest and berry finish. Raspberries, too. Tangy and extremely long. Attractive now but will age beautifully.
