The Story

Château Batailley, Grand Cru Classé 1855, is Borie-Manoux's and the Castéja-family's flagship. The name comes from the battle ("bataille") that took place there during the 100-years war in 1453. During this battle, the French re-conquered the neighbouring Chateau Latour from the English troops, a crucial point for ending the 300 year long reign of the English in Aquitaine. In the 16th century, the first vines were planted on these historical and blood soaked grounds. Chateau Batailley's 6ha park was designed by Barillet-Deschamps, Napoleon III's park architect, in 1850. In 1855 Napoleon III created the classification for the Paris World exhibition, and Batailley was selected together with the 60 best Medoc Estates to form the Grand Cru Classé 1855 Classification.

A classic Pauillac wine with Cabernet Sauvignon predominant and 18 months oak ageing. Now 7 years after the vintage it is beginning to come round but will be even better after another 2 or 3 years.

Written Notes

The 1961 Batailley is a wine that I have tasted three of four times including a spellbinding bottle back in 2007. Nothing has ever quite approached that example, although this bottle made an extremely fine Pauillac in this year. Blackberry, mint and graphite comprise the well-defined nose, bottles displaying varying levels of precision, this one quite good. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, impressive depth and unapologetically classic in style. Truffle and smoke develop towards the finish that offers plenty of freshness, even if it does not quite possess the length of its peers. One of the better value 1961 Left Bank wines if you find a bottle. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux.
