The Story

The Sauternes produced by Château de Fargues is the result of outstanding gifts of nature and the motivation – one might even say the stubbornness – of a family devoted to fine wine, and an attentive, enthusiastic winemaking team.
It takes four years to produce wine at Fargues, and work is constantly being done simultaneously on four vintages at any one time.

Written Notes

2020 de Fargues 95-96p
Tasted in November 2021. Barrel sample. 80% Semillon + 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Difficult weather conditions with hot weather and rain in September and October. Only three tries resulted in the production of 6hl/ha, of which less than half was worth the standards of the property. Anyway, what was produced, was of excellent quality. Guava, mango and pineapple. Elegant, vibrant, great acidity, refined. Flawless heather honey finish.

Full bottle 1,375 g. Cask sample taken 6 April. 75% Sémillon, 25% Sauvignon Blanc. Just 3 hl/ha. Fermented and aged, for all of 30 months probably, in barrel (40% new).
Pure, deep golden colour. Very much work in progress. The most embryonic of these 2020 sweet white bordeaux samples. For the moment it speaks more of buttery-sweet oak than of fruit. Lots of alcohol! This may well develop into something extremely serious but it's difficult to judge at the moment. There's a little heat on the end. It's almost more like a liqueur than a wine. Not the most refreshing 2020, but certainly extremely distinctive!
