The Story

Château HOSANNA deftly marries elegance with depth and could be considered, thanks to the delicate touch of the Cabernet Franc, a feminine counterpart to Château PETRUS.

Château Hosanna is unclassified, but has historically been considered among the great crus of the region. The property is situated south of Château Lafleur, west of Château Pétrus and north of Château Vieux Certan. Sharing its origin with Château Vieux Certan and Château Certan-de-May, the estate was once part of the original Certan property, belonging to the de May family before the French Revolution. For a period, the wine was sold as Château Certan-Marzelle, until it was acquired by the Giraud family in 1956, and was renamed Château Certan-Giraud.

In early 1999 ETS. Jean-Pierre Moueix purchased Château Certan- Giraud and the property was divided into two parts, one of which was sold. The remaining 12 acre parcel, located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, was renamed Hosanna
The illustrious and famed Bordeaux negociant firm of Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix was founded in 1937 and holds exclusive rights to sell and manage some of the greatest vineyards on the right bank of Bordeaux. The properties of Jean-Pierre Moueix can be found in the appelations of pomerol and St. Emilion with each estate being carefully selected by Christian Moueix. The Moueix family have defined a style of winemaking distinguished by integrity and total devotion to the expression of each individual vineyard.

Only the best fruit from the oldest vines of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is used to produce Hosanna, with the remainder sold as Château Certan Marzelle. This is one of the most exciting properties in Pomerol, producing wines that manage to be rich and concentrated while retaining the appellation’s classic charm and elegance.

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat resulted in early flowering. Also, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and one can expect a more opulent vintage than in the last few years.

The summer this year has been the warmest since 1959, yet the rain has fallen at the right times during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will yield grapes with high potential alcohol and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: "It has been a good and extreme growing season which hopefully also produces great wines".

Written Notes

2020  Château Hosanna Pomerol Dark in color, the wine is loaded with truffle, flowers, black and blue fruits and spice. Full-bodied with a serious depth of flavor, the wine is rich, supple, silky, long and intense. With the texture of velvet, the perfectly ripe, sweet, plums, cherries, blackberries, blueberries and dark cocoa holds on to your palate for at least 50 seconds. The purity here is just great.  Give it a decade in the cellar and this will be a beauty. Clearly, this is the finest vintage of Hosanna ever produced. 97-99  Pts

Sporting an opaque purple-black color, the 2020 Hosanna gallops out of the glass with bright, vivacious scents of crushed black and red plums, mulberries and redcurrant jelly, leading to underlying scents of powdered cinnamon, lilacs, pencil shavings and damp slate with a hint of wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely constructed, giving lots of nuanced, tightly wound black fruits and earthy layers with a fine-grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. 96-98

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Delicate nose with slightly closed character, opens up slowly, displaying an aroma reminiscent of sweet elderberries, juicy blackberries and flowery hints with an discreet toasting aroma in the background. On the palate well balanced with elegant fruit, ripe tannins, mild acidity and discreet spiciness. A  luscious character with excellent length.
