The Story

The work in the vineyard at Rauzan-Ségla is carried out plot by plot, plant by plant. The harvest is performed with the same painstaking care as the other tasks throughout the year. Each step is approached with the same attention to detail, from the picking to the production of the new wine.

Each vintage must be considered unique and be treated as such, demanding a renewed attention and making any attempt at an annual routine quite impossib...

Vintage 1900

The legendary 1900 !

The 1900 vintage in Bordeaux holds a unique place in this history, marked by a combination of factors that contributed to the character of the wines produced.

Written Notes

The 1900 Rauzan-Ségla is presently the oldest vintage that I have encountered and comes from a legendary growing season. This bottle was re-corked in 2001 and readers can glean further information about this wine from my report on the château. It has a clear colour with modest maturation on the rim, quite deep in hue in the core so that you would never guess its true age. It has a divine bouquet, very fresh and beautifully delineated, very pretty red berry fruit, orange zest and cedar, and crushed rose petals that are all exquisitely detailed and remarkably vivacious. With time it becomes slightly medicinal, hints of marmalade and quince developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with incredible concentration that is tangible after 118 years. Amazing in terms of its precocity and sucrosity. There is very fine acidity here, tangible energy and astonishing in terms of length with its almost honeyed texture towards the finish. This is a sensational Rauzan-Ségla that must have been monumental in its youth. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château.
