The Story

Château Trotanoy, a famous growth whose soil was too hard to work (« trop anoi » in medieval French) is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region on one of the most beautiful parts of Pomerol. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château Trotanoy is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region. Bordeaux: After four miserable vintages came the hot vintage of 1975 which put Bordeaux wines briefly into the limelight once again. The unsettled temperature in September turned into good weather for the harvest. Grapes were high in sugar content, but for many reds especially Cabernet Sauvignon based ones were lacking of phenolic ripeness. This yielded masculine and even aggressive reds with austere and even hard tannins.

Written Notes

Intense ruby red colour. Very rich and intense nose with ripe black currants, dark chocolate, and cigar box aromas. Medium-bodied wine with moderately high acidity with firm slightly green tannins. Sweet dark fruits, walnuts and licorice flavours in mid palate. The finish is long but little coarse lacking elegance and some fruit to be in great balance. Nevertheless big wine with rich and rustic style. Drinking well now, not improving but will keep another 5-10 years still.

Tasted in March 2020. Very close to 1971 and 1964 in terms of power, structure and length. Great, great complexity, richness and sophisticated touch. Utterly impressive wine with still many years left in the tank.
