The Story

Château Trotanoy, a famous growth whose soil was too hard to work (« trop anoi » in medieval French) is located on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux wine region on one of the most beautiful parts of Pomerol. As all wine produced in this appellation, Château Trotanoy is unclassified, but the estate is estimated among the great growths of the region. It was purchased in 1953 by the Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix. Château Trotanoy’s vineyard was one of the ...

Wine Information

We have to admit it….. we love Trotanoy. We wake up with the view of their beautiful cypress trees when we are in Pomerol, and we love how this wine ages so well. The 2020 vintage suits Trotanoy with its dark glossy colour and fabulous nose of violets, cassis, cedar, sweet blueberries, floral notes of hedgerow blossom and a touch of oak. The texture is velvety, soft and very beautiful with a tannic reverberation which is very energetic. This w...

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat resulted in early flowering. Also, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and one can expect a more opulent vintage than in the last few years.

The summer this year has been the warmest since 1959, yet the rain has fallen at the right times during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will yield grapes with hig...

Written Notes

I tasted five wines from the 2020 vintage: La Grave, Latour à Pomerol, La Fleur Petrus, Trotanoy, and Belair Monange. This was my first experience with these wines in the 2020 vintage, as I could not taste them from the barrel during the primeur tasting in April 2021 due to travel restrictions caused by COVID-19. I was very impressed by the delicate and silky nature of La Grave (92 points) and Latour à Pomerol (93 points). La Fleur Petrus (97+ points) was sublime and highly complex, while Trotanoy (98+ points) was multidimensional, with everything ideally in place. Belair Monange (98+ points) had intense black truffles and black cherries on the nose and was sophisticated to the core.

As good as this was from barrel, it is even better in the bottle! The array of black and dark red fruits, with nuances of flowers, chocolate, licorice, wet earth and spice in the perfume lets you know you are in for something special. This wine is what hedonism is all about. Sensuous, silky, polished, fresh and opulent, texturally, this is off the charts. The wine tastes and feels like the fruits were drenched in velvet, infused with dark chocolate and then polished, making this effortless to drink. The seamless finish hits the 60 second mark. Clearly, this is a legend in the making. If you are a fan of Trotanoy and you have the extra income, run, do not walk and grab some, as not much was made and it is only going to become more expensive from here. Drink from 2025-2060.

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Exuberant nose, ripe dark berries, plums and hints of blackcurrant spurs, violets and hints of liquorice, oriental spices. On the palate luscious character with elegant toasting flavour, juicy and sweet fruit and fine minerality in the aftertaste. A great wine with freshness, refinement and persistence, polished tannins and multi-layered aftertaste.
