The Story

The exotic, highly perfumed, concentrated, massively structured, rich and complex single vineyard Clarendon Hills Astralis (“pertaining to the stars”) derives from 35 to 70 year old dry grown vines planted on a complex mixture of clay, ironstone and gravely soils. Written Notes

This flagship wine of Clarendon Hills is one of the most refined style Syrahs made in Australia if not the most refined. Over 70 years old Syrah vines produce extremely small yields of two tons per acre in clay soil rich in iron and gravel. The vinification is done in a very natural way in open tanks at fermentation temperatures of up to 32˚C. No cultivated yeasts are used. Ageing in French barriques for 18 months without any filtration or fining. Dense ruby colour. Powerful complex nose with great dose of pepper, ripe raspberries and brambles with smoky and bacony aromas. Full-bodied wine has immense power and concentration between jammed dark fruit, rich ripe tannins and refined acidity. Incredibly long spicy, smoky and chewy finish. Sheer power with style and many more years to go.
