Written Notes

Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris 2020 – The Burge family are a Barossa institution. One of, if not the, largest of all landowners, with over 300 hectares, Grant Burge followed on from the work of his predecessors, establishing a reputation for value and quality from this most famous region. A few years ago, they added the impressive Corryton Mansion to the family holdings. It is an ideal site to act as the home for the next generation, the 6th, to make its mark. Trent Burge has already made waves, both on the sporting field and in the vineyard, and sister, Amelia, is developing and marketing the business. They are joined in the winemaking by Matthew Pellew and Andrew Cockram. One suspects that there are few prouder parents in the Barossa than Grant and Helen.

But the wine. For a grape which can be a bit blah, this is a very fine example. Immediately obvious varietal notes explode from the glass. Pears with a stonefruit/peach backing and underneath all that, a minerally base. Lovely texture. Much better length than one encounters with so many examples of this grape. Should drink really well over the next 1 to 3 years. 91 now, but a good chance that some time in the cellar might raise that a point or two.
