The Story

The incredibly rocky, rhyolitic soils of this Howell Mountain site provide fruit with structure and depth, yet the cool climate produces a wine of restraint and vibrant acidity. An underlying minerality gives the wine a particularly distinctive character and provides another layer of complexity. The appellation has become a favorite of collectors who value the ageworthy capacity of wines from this elevation.

Written Notes

Oxtail Ravioli with seared fois gras, fava beans and garlic confit. When I saw this menu selection, I knew there was a chance that this could be "epic"...and it was! What a symphony of flavor and texture- rich and savory. It was a perfect canvas for a wide variety of wine options. Peter presented our first of the three single vineyard Dana cabernets- the Hershey Vineyard from Howell Mountain. Dark red, almost opaque in the glass. In harmony with its vineyard name, the aroma shows distinct chocolate notes along with sweet black cherry fruit and a bit of alcohol heat. Rich entry, velvety texture that immediately bursts with flavors of black cherry liqueur framed by rich chocolate. The opulence goes right up to the edge of "cloying", then backs off into a reasonable balance and long finish. It was surprising to see how the 100% new French oak barrels imparted so much chocolate aromatics to this vineyard, while the same barrels had much less effect on the other vineyards at Dana. This wine was very good, but not the favorite of the three for anyone at the table.
