“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus Vineyard is truly one of the profound wines of the vintage. Aged 24 months in 90% new French oak, it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from their most precocious and earliest-to-ripen Cabernet site. Dense blue/purple, as are the other wines, it separates itself with its extraordinarily flowery, blueberry and blackberry-scented aromatics. The wine is dense and multidimensional, full-bodied and opulent, with low acidity and fabulous silky, pure fruit. This wine is best drunk over the next two decades. Production of the Lotus single-vineyard is the smallest, at 250 cases”?– Robert Parker

The Story

Out of the three Dana Estate owned vineyards, the Lotus vineyard located on St. Helena hillsides, stands at 1200 feet above sea level with a beautiful panoramic view of the Napa Valley floor.

This steep hillside vineyard is spread over the rocky, low-yielding soils with Western exposure. Thanks to the influence of the afternoon sun, the wines shows ripe and rich fruitiness while the three to twelve inches, fractured grey bedrock soil generates the marked mineral structure to the wine.

“This is incredibly dry, well-drained soil that has very low water holding capacity and in dry, warm vintages it reflects outstanding a level of grape ripeness,” Vawter sums up.

Wine Information

This estate has turned into one of the superstars of Napa Valley thanks to the energetic and visionary ownership of Korean Hi Sang Lee and his son, along with the winemaking guru Philippe Melka. These are all sensational wines coming from some of the best sites in Napa Valley. All of the 2014s out of bottle showed slightly better than they did from a barrel tasting a year ago.

Written Notes

This is well-built but stays restrained in style, featuring alluring cassis and blackberry flavors, lined with black tea, minerally iron and warm tobacco accents. A late flash of warm paving stone adds depth and range through the finish. Should put on weight in the cellar
