The Story

The incredibly rocky, rhyolitic soils of this Howell Mountain site provide fruit with structure and depth, yet the cool climate produces a wine of restraint and vibrant acidity. An underlying minerality gives the wine a particularly distinctive character and provides another layer of complexity. The appellation has become a favorite of collectors who value the ageworthy capacity of wines from this elevation.

Written Notes

Prosciutto wrapped monkfish with morels ragout and veal jus reduction. An interesting match for big red wine...I was initially skeptical, but won over with the first bite. The firm texture of the monkfish (aka poor man's lobster), the discreet saltiness of the prosciutto and the savory veal jus worked just fine! This course was appropriately paired with Dana's "Helms Vineyard"- the home vineyard of the Rutherford based winery. The wine offered cassis and spice in the nose. Pleasing to me, it showed less alcohol and wood elements than the Hershey. Satiny and smooth on the palate, with a broad core of cassis and black fruits. Very nicely constructed, with lively acidity keeping the wine moving into a long finish. Pure and balanced, in capital letters! For me, this was the best of Dana- it was a bit more restrained than the others, but a terrific expression of California cabernet. I view the restraint as a virtue. The medium weight and heightened acidity made it work well with the lighter monkfish.
