Vintage 1997

1997 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The exciting Burgundy vintage in 1997 is regarded as having produced some of the most charming wines in living memory. The whites are notable for their richness and balance. Full, elegant and well bred, they are for great short to medium term drinking pleasure. Written Notes

If the d'Auvenay was a privilege, this is a celebration. Amazing to try. This is only the 2nd time I’ve ever tried a Mortet Chambertin, and what a loss to the wine world that he so sadly took his own life. According to Michael Dhillon, he made only two barrels of this wine, so a couple of hundred bottles. The previous time I tried one was the 1996, coincidently, brought along to a lunch a few years ago by the same good mate that fronted with this one. Actually, no coincidence at all as he remembered how besotted with the 1996 I was (one of the most truly spine-tingling Burgundies I’ve ever tried). '97 is certainly a lesser vintage than 1996 (as Michael said, there was both acidification and chaptalisation in places, though all justified in the way the French have mastered, of course), so it was tough to expect something equally as spectacular. But it was seriously close. What a wine. Truffle and fungal notes and noticeably spicy. A hint rustic but alluringly so. Lots of cherry, both bright and sour. Plush and ripe. Good acidity. Not the '96 but still a glorious Burgundy. Terrific texture, just not quite the ethereal nature of the 1996. Spicy. And with time in the glass, opened up more and more. Tasted 30-8-2011 97+
