The Story

La Romanée's tiny 0.84ha, under half the size of its neighbour La Romanée-Conti, make it the smallest Appellation Controlée in France. A monopoly of the Liger Belair family since the 1830s, La Romanée is just above La Romanée-Conti and therefore has a slightly steeper slope and shallower soil. Since 2002 the wine has been made by Vicomte Louis Michel Liger-Belair who heads up the Domaine du Comte Liger Belair estate, turning La Romanée into on...

2006 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The personality of Burgundy wines makes the difference

A charmer. Such is the epithet most frequently employed when Burgundy's newest vintage is evoked. Nearly two months after the grape harvest, and following a year typified by rather fantastical weather, Burgundy is finally catching its breath. The 2006 vintage, a preoccupying one which never allowed an idle moment, both in the vineyards and in the cellars, exc...

Written Notes

Moderately intense, ruby red colour. Rustic and evolved nose shows volatile, animal and barnyard character with hints of smoke and woodiness. Crisp and intense palate is slightly austere with restrained fruit. Long earthy aftertaste. Rustic in style.

The closer was a killer, courtesy of one of Burgundy’s hottest producers. Every wine I drink from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair is delicious; even his Vosne Romanee makes me warm and fuzzy. His 2006 Liger-Belair La Romanee made me downright hot and bothered. James Suckling noted ‘roses‘ while Tucker was more feeling the ‘peonies.’ Its nose was amazing; there was so much greatness happening here. Its palate had what I would call latent acidity, because its fruit was so good and covered up the crime scene. There was a kiss of rubber, as in a Lamborghini leaving you in the dust. Its palate was so rich and so much better than anything and every other red we tasted before. It was deeper, rounder and longer yet still so friendly and fresh. A recent conversation with Aubert de Villaine about Louis-Michel had Aubert calling him ‘a good addition to Burgundy.’ Those words don’t come easily when it comes to the Godfather (96).

“This is as reserved and cool as the Reignots but more complex, refined and sophisticated still as it just exudes class and breed with a fantastically broad array of spicy and pure black fruit aromas where the reserve and spice components are also reflected by the minerally, serious and delicious medium full-bodied flavors brimming with s ve and extract on the very firm finish supported by bur- ied tannins and huge length that doesn’t stop. This isn’t quite as concentrated and powerful as the ‘05 version but it’s more than a respectable successor and there is so much sap that it gives the impression of being much more approachable now than it actually is.”(95pts BH)

Bright ruby. Scented, some mint, light anise note, touch of prunes and more red berries and spices nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, nuanced, elegant, lovely balance, refined and nuanced, somewhat fuller bodied and more structure, ever so slightly edgy finish to be picky.
