The Story

Musigny Grand Cru produces yields one of the best grapes in the entire Burgundy. Its terroir is much more complex than Clos de Vougeot lying just below of it. Musigny is known for its super elegant and feminine characteristics, but this hot vintage gave this fine “lady” some extra muscles that has given an extra dimension to it and structure to last for long.

The village of Chambolle-Musigny lies in the very heart of the Côte de Nuits. The ...

Vintage 2011

Burgundy 2011

'We are beginning to get spoilt with all these fine vintages', said Lalou Bize in October 2011. 'We are very happy with our 2011s.' 'Much better than we had expected,' said Denis Bachelet. 'Lots of colour and fruit, together with good acidity and souplesse.'

Yes. It would appear that Burgundy has done it again. And if views are not quite as enthusiastic in Chablis and in the Côte Chalonnaise, at least in the Côte d'Or (and ...

Written Notes

A brooding and highly reserved yet incredibly complex nose is almost as dazzling as that of the Romanée St. Vivant and if not quite as elegant then it's very close. There is an amazing array of red and black fruit aromas that are liberally cut with spice and floral elements and it's remarkable just how much there is to admire. The intensely stony and overtly powerful flavors are massively scaled yet the texture is silky, refined and ultra-pure before culminating in a painfully intense, explosive and palate staining finish that lasted several minutes. An exceptional effort though one that will need every bit of 20 to 25 years to be at its best but this is a masterpiece in the making.

Lalou Bize-Leroy rarely has much to say about vintages these days as she mostly just concludes that each of them have their own personalities and that should be a sufficient explanation for what transpired. For 2011 specifically, she did concede that yields were a bit more generous than usual at between 24 and 25 hl/ha but that the growing season did cause some angst. As to the style of the wines, she likens that to her 2006s, calling them "elegant, fresh and refined wines that will age on their balance." After almost 20 years of visiting the domaine, I am rarely surprised by the typically stupendous quality but I confess that Mme Leroy so far out-performed the general quality of the vintage that it would have been easy to assume that we were tasting a more illustrious one. It's not so much that the wines are powerhouses of exceptional concentration, so much as they are just so harmonious and seamless that you can't help but admire their grace and inner beauty. The descriptor "stunning" isn't praise enough when you put this kind of quality in the context of the 2011 vintage. If you can find them, and then afford them, don't miss them. The Leroy '11s were bottled in December, 2012 and I tasted them in February 2013.
