The Story

With the founding of Harlan Estate in 1984, we embarked upon our mission of creating a “first growth” of California. The estate’s early vineyard development began with just six acres. Today our planting is essentially complete, with nearly forty acres under vine to the classic varietals: cabernet sauvignon (70%), merlot (20%), cabernet franc (8%), and petit verdot (2%). Invariably, the finished wine is predominately cabernet sauvignon, which we blend with varying amounts of the other three varietals as we seek to express faithfully the unique and distinctive character of the site.

Modest quantities of wine were produced in 1987, 1988, and 1989 from grapes that represented the second, third, and fourth leaf of our estate vineyard. In each of those years a small number of barrels were produced in the hope of gaining a prescient glimpse into what the character of the land—never before cultivated—might have to offer. The wines were blended, bottled, and labeled with a special designation. Though charming in their own way, these first wines fell short of our standards and aspirations, so were never released. They continue to serve as humble reminders of where we began the journey.

Written Notes

In the glass, the Harlan Estate 2018 is a captivating and deep garnet-red, offering a glimpse of its extraordinary concentration. Its clarity and brilliance underscore the wine's impeccable craftsmanship.

The nose is a symphony of aromas that immediately enthrall. Ripe dark fruits take center stage, with luscious blackberries, black cherries, and cassis leading the way. These fruit notes are layered with fragrant hints of violets, lavender, and crushed herbs, creating a complex and inviting bouquet. Subtle undertones of cedar, vanilla, and dark chocolate from oak aging add further depth and intrigue.

On the palate, Harlan Estate 2018 lives up to its reputation as a Napa Valley icon. It is a full-bodied masterpiece, seamlessly weaving together flavors of dark fruit, spice, and elegance. The dark fruit flavors are rich and opulent, with blackberry compote, cassis liqueur, and dark plums gracing the palate. The wine's texture is velvety, with finely integrated tannins that provide both structure and a luxurious mouthfeel. Layers of complexity continue to unfold, revealing notes of espresso, tobacco, and exotic spices.

Harlan Estate 2018 boasts impeccable structure, characterized by its finely grained tannins that lend grace and depth to the wine. The acidity is vibrant and well-balanced, contributing to a long and harmonious finish. This wine exemplifies the perfect equilibrium between power and finesse, showcasing a remarkable sense of harmony and age-worthiness.

The finish is exceptionally long and resonant, echoing the wine's dark fruit and spice notes. It lingers on the palate, leaving an enduring impression of richness and complexity.

Harlan Estate 2018 is a triumph of Napa Valley winemaking, exemplifying the essence of the region's terroir and the uncompromising dedication to producing wines of unparalleled quality. While it is already a wine of extraordinary charm and complexity, it also possesses the potential to evolve and improve over the next 30-40 years or more. This wine is a true testament to the artistry and passion of its winemakers and a rare gem in the world of fine wine.

While 2018 is undeniably captivating in its youth, it has the capacity to reward those with patience. This wine has the potential to age gracefully for decades, revealing even greater depth and nuance with time. It is a wine reserved for special occasions and cherished moments, a testament to the exceptional quality.

The 2018 Harlan Estate is deep, plush and full of potential. But potential is the key word here, as the 2018 is also very reticent today. Its depth, power and pedigree are all obviously apparent. It is an atypical wine for Napa, as the acids, tannin and structure are all pretty prominent. Hints of black cherry, gravel, spice, menthol and lavender gradually open with some coaxing. The 2018 is a remarkable wine. I remember tasting it for the first time in Spring 2019, when it came across as a bit light. Perhaps that was a reflection of early blending and a wine that had not bounced back from that. Since then, the 2018 has gained in richness and volume, while retaining the finessed style that is such a signature here these days.

Classy earth, oak and bay-leaf character on the nose, together with dark fruit, such as currants and blackberries. Forest flowers, too. Full-to medium-bodied, linear and tight with coolness and freshness. Mint and spearmint to the dark fruit. Lasts a long time. Such balance and intensity. Tight now, but great energy and length this year. Incredibly sophisticated and seductive. A joy to taste now, but try in 2025.

With its showy nose, the wine is already displaying black cherries, blackberry, plums, flowers, baking spice, licorice, chocolate, caramel and bay leaf. Full-bodied, lush, deep, concentrated and pure, the wine seamlessly coats your palate. Even though this is incredibly weighty, it is also remarkably light on its feel. The multi-layered finish builds and expands for over 60 seconds. This is a contender for the finest vintage of Harlan Estate ever produced. Winemaker Cory Empting calls it a perfect vintage! Considering all the incredible wines that have been made here, that is really saying something.
