The Story

The Old Garden vineyard is the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world planted in 1853. Dry-grown, original existing vines pre-Phylloxera. Eight rows of this rare and unique planting remain to this day at Rowland Flat and produce winemaker Dean Hewitson’s much-lauded single-vineyard table wine bearing the Old Garden name. The vineyard has been hand-tended and dry-farmed by Friedrich Koch and his direct descendants across three centuries.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is ruby red, and looking bright and medium. On the nose it is open, intense, complex, refined, generous and rich. The taste is round, ripe, toasty, fruity, silky, refined, with medium tannin, with silky tannins, and low in acidity, full-bodied, with balanced, complex structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has perfumed, floral, spice, smoky and toasty flavours. The finish is long, smooth, gentle, round and flavorful. This wine is fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 1-5 years.
