Art Series Margaret River Riesling 2020 – The famous Frog wine. John Olsen’s wonderful frog paintings have adorned the label of this wine for as long as I can remember.

On the face of it, a Margaret River Riesling might seem like a strange choice, taking up precious space in valuable vineyards, when grapes like Cabernet and Chardonnay could be used to produce world class wines (particularly by this maker), but this wine has long had a very loyal following.

This latest release is seriously and pleasingly aromatic, but it is still a little raw at this early stage. Coming together slowly. Florals, chalk, citrus, noticeably grapefruit. Plenty of bright acidity here. A wine offering real length. This is a fine young Riesling, exhibiting lots of flavour, but it will surely be better in two to three years, and then go on for many more. 90.

Tasted from a 10-cl sample bottle. Machine-picked at night, pressed immediately, juice was bottom racked off gross lees then warmed and inoculated with yeast cultures. Fermented in stainless steel at 12–13 °C for two weeks. Stirred, fined (bentonite, PVPP, milk), stabilised and bottled 18–20 August 2020. TA 7.85 g/l, pH 2.97. Released February 2021.
Jasmine fragrance, but that acidity takes no prisoners. Nothing delicate about it. This is skinny citrus – it's bones are carved from limes. All angles. Don't come looking for comfort here. You will be told to straighten your back and stiffen that upper lip.
