The Story

Leeuwin Estate is one of the five founding wineries of the now highly regarded Margaret River district of Western Australia. The “Art Series” wines represent the estates most opulent and ageworthy wines and are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists. This is an elegant, fresher style of Cabernet Sauvignon that puts purity of fruit first.

Vintage 2018

AUSTRALIA: Very promising quality with the most optimistic reviewers declaring 2018 great in every region and for every variety. The more cautious view is that early frosts reduced yields, but that consistent good weather throughout the second half of the growing season actually resulted in great potential.

Barossa 2018 vintage to savor

The 2018 Barossa vintage was completed at the end of April 2018, with growers and winemakers satisfied...

Art Series Margaret River Shiraz 2018 – Very dark red, purples. 93% Shiraz, 6% Malbec and 1% Viognier (you might think that 1% could hardly make a difference but I remember the extraordinary Len Evans telling a group of us that ½% was more than enough to change a wine). A total of 18 months in a variety of aged barrels, all of them French.

Offers a pleasing plushness and richness. This is not Barossa rich; nor is it cool climate lean, though there are plenty of spices, leather and pepper. Balanced, with fine tannins. Lingers beautifully. This is a very good Margaret River Shiraz and one with a future. 93.

"The same layers of complexity and spice as the 2017, with all the ripe fruit and power hallmarks of the 2018 vintage. Bouncy and chewy, the tannins are woven into the fruit. Fruit, oak, acid and tannins are integrated and elegant, showing cohesion and harmony from the get-go. Cool-climate elegance is the lasting impression of this wine, as is the fine, chalky tannin profile that ultimately carries the fruit over the course of the palate. Very detailed. Margaret River can be responsible for seriously beautiful shiraz – this is one."

Tasted from a 10-cl sample bottle. 93% Shiraz, 6% Malbec, 1% Viognier. Machine-picked and fermented in open- and closed-top fermenters, 20% whole bunch, daily pumpover and plunging. After primary fermentation, the wine was run to new (20%), one- and two-year-old barrels for malo. After six months it was blended and aged in French barrels for another 12 months, medium and medium-plus toast. Fined with egg white. Bottled 10–12 December 2019. Not yet released. TA 7.17 g/l, pH 3.32.
Dark-blue fruit on the nose, smudged with kohl and sketching charcoal. They suggest five spice, and I can get that pretty much exactly. Lots of black-olive tapenade bitterness and meatiness building into game and char and eucalypt and iron. Delicate violet florals dance over the rain-wet-wrought-iron clench of the finish. Tannins are both rugged and polished – cowboy movie star. A hint of Moroccan leather dipped in midnight-blue ink. Long and dramatic but elegant.
