The Story

The south and south-east facing Ribeauvillé terroirs Geisberg and Osterberg which overlook the winery have been producing this wine for several generations. The average age of the vines, 45 years, results in limited yields.

The marl-limestone-sandstone and fossil-flecked Muschelkalk composition of the soil, as well as the beautifully ripe grapes selected and harvested at the end of October lend this wine a remarkable personality: a dry and powerful Riesling, underlined by a mineral note and firm ripe acidity.

This wine is named for Frédéric Emile who became famous for providing a new guarantee of quality and authenticity for Trimbach in 1898.The prestigious signature wine of the house, the “Cuvée Frédéric Emile” is highly prized by connoisseurs and collectors.

Pair with : gourmet foods, quality fish, caviar, and fine white meats.

Ageing potential : The great “Cuvée Frédéric Emile” vintages age for twenty years and longer.

Availability : At the tasting local, the 2007 vintage is available, soon 2009 !

Written Notes

Very toasty and tertiary on the nose, with oxidative influence giving an apple-cider character to the fruit – but all is not lost on the palate. It's dry and tart, but there is so much fruit concentration that the oxidative influence isn't ruinous. Even so, this is far from peak condition. An old master in need of restoration. (RH)

Charming nose turns into stiff and less flirty palate, respectful for the house style. This wine turned out more extrovert on palate after 10 hours decanting. However, well-made and somehow closed at this stage. Hans Välimäki, two-Michelin star chef, would serve this with Fresh Scallop sushis!

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is yellow, and looking healthy and medium. On the nose it is open, ripe and charming. The taste is focused, rich, warming, and average in acidity, with balanced, well-integrated and good texture structure. On the palate it is layered and has caramel, citrus, floral, spice and tropical fruits flavours. The finish is medium long and spicy. This wine is fine. I paid around 30-50€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years. I do recommend.
