Wine Description
The Story
Founded in 1830, the Champagne Philippe Gonet is located in the heart of Le Mesnilsur-Oger. The 20 hectares of family vineyard are spread over 35 plots planted in 8 villages different.
This champagne is defined by the exclusive and confi dential selection of grand cru Chardonnays from Mesnil-sur-Oger, where certain vines were planted in 1929. A harvest that takes no shortcuts, this cuvée owes its name to the fossils, the belemnite rostrums, which line the soil. This champagne is the perfect expression of the chalky terroir that bore it. The wine rests for at least 6 years in our cellars, and has an extra-brut level of dryness.
The Philippe Gonet style combines minerality and pleasure. Our vines all benefit from legendary terroir made up of limestone subsoil, rich in fossils, 40 meters deep, formed more than 100 million ago years. This terroir is worked insecticide-free, herbicide-free, and with organic fertilizer.

Wine Information
Tasting: A brilliant and crystalline wine. Its effervescence is steady and vivacious. Strings of tiny bubbles rise to the surface, nurturing a persistent and creamy cordon of foam. Its aromatic bouquet is complex: smoky, grilled, nutty (hazelnut and cashew) and candied, all underlined by a touch of acacia honey. Its fleshy and welcoming palate greets you with an elegant vanilla warmth and a buttery touch then opens up to dried fruit and candied citrus (lemon, grapefruit) notes. Its fatty, supple beginning paves the way for a vivaciously mineral and wonderfully lasting finish.
Vintage 2006
A cold winter and springtime frosts laid the foundations for this vintage of abundant yields (12,997 kg/ha). Uneventful flowering was followed by exceptionally hot and sunny weather, which lasted until August. A dank August left producers fearful but fortunately warm, bright conditions in September redressed the balance. Harvest commenced on September 9th, producing grapes high in sugar level but notably low on acidity. The general health of the grapes was sufficient, producing wines which excel over the preceding 2005 vintage, another warm and ample year. The year's greatest wines are supple and expressive and despite the richness they escape being overly heavy. Overt and welcoming upon launch, the best come with excellent capacity for ageing. Winey, and richly fruity characters, most Champagnes regrettably miss some tension and finesse. Wines of the vintage include Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, Krug Vintage and Dom Pérignon Rosé.
