The Story

Traditionale makes a lovely drink as a youngster, but will definitely improve in the bottle for 6-10 years + for those who like Riesling with a little age. I am yet to discover a better Oyster wine than young, dry Clare Valley Riesling.

Written Notes

Fascinating for me to try this and the '97 together as the early hype on the 1997 riesling vintage in the Clare was massive. 1998 almost fell through the cracks, with little initial interest, not least because of the fuss surrounding the previous year. I well remember talking to Neil Pike at the time and he was adamant that '98 was the better year. I thought he is either a genius or stark raving, as this was very much against the prevailing tide. As it happens, he has been proved correct. In general, 1997 and 1998 were both very good years but the '97s have been very much more forward than expected and certainly more forward than the impressive '98s. This wine was still quite tight, with toast and honey. It has matured well. There are orange marmalade notes and toasty spice. Fine acidity. Good complexity, well cellared examples of this wine should sail through another decade, provided the piece of ex-tree stands up. 93
