The Story

The Lost Block range was born when an impending storm forced the Tyrrell’s vineyard crew to abandon a prized block of Hunter semillon to pick less storm resilient grapes. The ‘lost’ block was eventually picked days later and the winemaking team were so impressed with the characters of the finished wine, it was decided to give it a label of its own.

Over the years, the range has expanded to include wines from some of Australia’s best known regions, each crafted in a ‘drink now’ style – soft and approachable, with the same fresh, vibrant fruit characters that made Lost Block Semillon such a success.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from fine vineyards which can deliver the quality of fruit worthy of the Tyrrell Lost Block moniker. The clever design by mother nature of unique microclimes and terroirs imparts a synergy of regional complexities. Parcels are harvested, crushed and chilled before transport to Hunter Valley. Components are vinified and assembled by the Tyrrell winemaking team in a mix of open vats and potter fermenters at the Pokolbin wineworks. Lost Block is an essentially fruit driven Cabernet Sauvignon, its substantive tannins are tamed after eighteen months maturation in a selection of older, larger format 2500 litre French oak vats and newer 225 litre French oak barriques. Alcohol 14.0%
