The Story

In the heart of the Rhône Valley, this small chapel has become one of the world’s great historic buildings
La Chapelle, the jewel of Maison Jaboulet, has a rich and emotive history.
During the 13th century, a knight called Gaspard de Sterimberg settled in the hills of Tain l’Hermitage with the permission of Blanche de Castille. On his return from the crusades, he sought calm and serenity and isolated himself as a hermit, hence the name of the Hermitage appellation. There he built a Chapel, overlooking the Rhône Valley.

La Chapelle endured the passage of time and finally became the property of Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné in 1919.
Hermitage “La Chapelle” is a blend of terroirs, including the prestigious hillsides of Méal and Bessards. Each one provides its own aromatic characteristics, as well as an elegant tannin structure, giving the wine great ageing potential.

Since the legendary 1961 vintage, which was classed as one of the Twelve mythical wines of the 20th century, Hermitage “la Chapelle” has become one of the world’s most sought-after wines.
Its fame has led Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné to revive a historical tradition by producing a few bottles of 2006 “la Chapelle” white wine.

The diversity of “terroirs” on these lands gives our wine an identity of its own, thanks to the blending of grapes from different plots.

Soil:
The Syrah vines are planted in rich and varied soils with very diverse terroirs (les Bessards, les Greffieux, le Méal and les Rocoules).
It is the richness of these different terroirs that provides our Hermitage La Chapelle with its complexity.
Grape Variety:
Very old Syrah vines; goblet pruning on stakes.
Age of the vines:
40 to 60 years.
Vinification:
Grapes are brought down from the slopes of l’Hermitage on small sledges, after which they are sorted by hand and vinified traditionally in our wineries
Final blending is carried out during the ageing process and is done through judicious selection from the different terroirs of l’Hermitage.
Ageing:
La Chapelle is aged in wood in our ancient “VINEUM” cellar for 15 to 18 months. During this process the wines are also racked.
Yield:
Low yields of 10 to 18 hl/ha.

Wine Information

The total harvest of the Côtes du Rhône wines is 2,676,547 Hl. In the northernmost part, the grape harvests began on the 12th. September and finished on the 6th. October.A good autumn, wet at first, but warm for the season. Winter is very dry, not very cold, still no snow. Spring is fine and growth is well under way; flowering starts at the end of May. A hot, dry summer with very little rain. August is torrid.
The harvest has very good weather.
1989 will see another very good vintage for both red and white wines; they will keep well. A great year.

We had a couple more Ganbeis revisiting some of the Bordeaux, then a couple of Jaboulet Hermitage La Chapelles. The 1989 was a dirty birdie (92) and the 1990 was jammy, chewy, friendly and zippy, one of the better bottles of this that I have had recently (94).

1989

'La robe penche vers le grenat, avec moins d’éclat que celle du 1990. Les arômes paraissent moins frais, avec des notes de vanille bourbon qui simplifient le caractère habituel de la syrah. Généreux en bouche, un peu fort en alcool, il ne montre pas l’extraordinaire complexité du vin précédent, mais constituera une bouteille fort savoureuse dans une dizaine d’années.'
REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE 12/1999 - 01/2000

'Deep black crimson. Gloriously “oriental”, exotic bouquet. Cloves, musk, smoky roses. So exciting. Wildly spicy scents and a mouthful of spices. Utterly rich and luscious. So thick and velvety. A huge joy. Coffee and cocoa at the end. “Hot” and rich, but beautifully harmonious and with the “lift” of answering acidity to balance exotic, macerated prunes. I adore this.'
SERENA SUTCLIFFE, MW 09/2000

'This fabulous, blockbuster Hermitage is far more backward than the 1990. It has been totally unevolved since bottling, but at the Jaboulet tasting, it was beginning to reveal some of its formidable potential. A saturated opaque purple color is followed by aromas of cassis, minerals, and hot bricks/wood fire. Super-ripe and full-bodied, with a massive mid-section, teeth-staining extract, and mouth-searing tannin, this monster-sized La Chapelle is not as compelling of charming as the 1990, but its low acidity, power, and muscle suggest it will, with extended cellaring, rival its more precocious younger sibling. The monumental 1989 has been largely forgotten because of the attention garnered by the 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050.' (96+)
ROBERT PARKER’S – WINE ADVOCATE 06/2000

'Very good colour. But not as full as either 1988 or 1990. Lovely nose. Fat, rich and ample. Plenty of substance. Lots of concentration. Not too cooked, which some 1989s are, sadly. Succulent and full of charm. Fullish on the palate. Rich and abundant, with very good tannins and a surprisingly good acidity. This is not as classic as the 1988, nor as monstrously exciting as the 1990, but it is ripe and flamboyant and balanced and seductive. The most forward of this brilliant trio of vintages. Very blackberry in flavour. Long and lovely. Very fine.'
THE VINE CLIVE COATES, MW 12/1999

'A torrid summer with little rain and good weather during the harvest led to a Chapelle of immense potential. Burly and not as seamless as the '90, with layers of this wine's typical plum, mineral and blackberry notes. While monolithic like a granite block, all the pieces should come together as it ages. Best from 2005 through 2030.' (96)
