The Story

Beaune vineyards are the most extensive in the Côte de Beaune region, between Savigny to the North, and Pommard to the South. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this village, but 36 Premiers Crus. The red wines from the central and southern parts are powerful, tannic, and deeply coloured while those from the northern area are generally less intensely coloured with softer fruit flavours. The Beaune 1er Cru «Clos des Ursules» is a walled in portion of the Beaune 1er Cru «Vignes Franches». It was purchased in 1826 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and has remained a solely owned property of the Jadot family.

Fermentation is carried out as naturally as possible made as natural as possible in open tanks (without stems). It usually undergoes fairly long fermentation (25 to 33 days) in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas. The different premiers crus are vinified separately and then aged in wooden barrels for 15-18 months. The blending is performed at the end of the vinification.

Beaune Premier Cru "Clos des Ursules" is a full, firm and rich wine. It is fine, with a slightly earthy bouquet and long, lush finish,  converge in a wine which perfectly balances elegance and power.

It works harmoniously with delicate meat dishes as well as most cheeses.

Written Notes

A barrel sample. Decanted for 0 minutes. A deep, bright red clean colour of a young wine. A sophisticated, perfume-like and very open scent. A tight, multidimensional wine, which fills the whole mouth. A smooth and balanced experience despite its young age and rich essence. A wonderfully silky, wide-ranging wine, with a good acid structure whose smooth oakness reminded of itself only gently and did not hide underneath it the wine’s fresh and tight fruitiness. A long, even aftertaste. An enjoyable and imposing wine already. At its best from 2015. 92 points (tasted in 2009)

Bright ruby. Red berries, some herbs, fruity, spices, touch of strawberry jam and figs. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, structured, firm, quite intense, spices, long, needs time, give it five to ten years cellaring or more. 93

Inside Information

If one had to choose the vineyard most closely identified with the Louis Jadot name, it would certainly be the "Clos des Ursules".
The Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the North and Pommard to the South. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this commune, but 36 Premier Crus. The Beaune ler Cru “Clos des Ursules” is a walled portion of the Beaune ler Cru known as Vignes-Franches. This precious 2,29 hectare vineyard once belonged to the Ursulines, a religious order of nuns who taught the young girls of Beaune.
The Ursulines were originally named “The Company of Saint Ursule”. They owned farms and land, including vineyards, and made their living from the revenue. As with all convents, the property was often bestowed as gifts from the people of the region. In this way, the Ursulines came to own up to 24 hectares of vines, including a tiny plot in the Vignes-Franches vineyard in Beaune, which has today become the Clos des Ursules. It was purchased in 1826 – some 33 years prior to the foundation of the Louis Jadot Company - by Louis Henry Denis Jadot and has since remained the property of the Jadot family. Clos des Ursules vineyard is planted with Pinot Noir grapes at a density of 10.000 vines per hectare and has been gradually replanted since 1954.
Maison Louis Jadot's principles of vinification balance tradition and technology, and focus on the purest expression of the "terroir," or qualities unique to the microclimate, through the medium of the vine. It is Jadot's fundamental conviction that the expression of each wine's origin and typicity resides in interfering with nature as little as possible.
