The Story

Ausone owes its unique quality and longevity to a magic marriage of situation and soil. Written Notes

Wintergreen, gingerbread and light molasses permeated through the nose of the 1942 Ausone. It had a soft palate that was interesting in a gamey and tangy way. There was a web to its way, and its flavors were sundried. Alexander The Great found lots of ‘iron’ in this gritty wine (93).

The 1942 Ausone has a rather musty nose that I once likened to my aunt’s attic up in Yorkshire, one that has been barely touched for many years. There is refinement here but it has been rubbed out by age. The palate is indicative of a wine kept in barrel for an excessively long period vis-à-vis the fruit, frayed at the edges and drying on the finish. Any bottles should be drunk soon but well-preserved examples are worth seeking out for the aromatics alone.
