The Story

Ausone owes its unique quality and longevity to a magic marriage of situation and soil. BORDEAUX / Due to the climatic conditions and the breeding of the vines, Bordeaux produced fine and concentrated wines in 1952, 1953 and 1955. 1956 is a historic year, because it marks the beginning of a new era for Bordeaux. Written Notes

The 1956 Ausone represented only the second wine I have ever encountered from this frost-decimated season, though being located on the incline, apparently Ausone suffered less than others. Still, the nose was dusty with scorched earth and little fruit. The tannins are hard and it feels musty and fungal. “Not totally undrinkable” were my last three words scribbled in my booklet. Damning with faint praise! Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.
