The weather this year was ideal, with all the parameters for a very great vintage combining concentration, freshness, and finesse.

2010 Cheval Blanc has a dark, intense colour and a superbly deep, complex, and concentrated nose typical of great Cabernet Franc. The bouquet displays seductive floral and fruity aromas, along with fresh fig, blackcurrant, blackberry, and raspberry, as well as notes of bergamot and mint. With aeration, more flor...

The Story

Whether by design or by pure chance, there are in the world exceptional places. Cheval Blanc is one of these. Combining a unique soil with a symbiotic mix of grape varieties, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Cheval Blanc produces a wine, which has the rare quality of being good at any age. It is without doubt one of the most consistent wines in the world. Cheval Blanc's unique identity is due to its varied soils, early-ripening microclimate, the per...

Wine Information

2010 is an outstanding vintage. It was among the driest on record and cool evenings made it possible to pick grapes at optimum ripeness. The resulting wine combines concentration and finesse, and is perfectly balanced. When it reaches its peak, will it be even better than the illustrious 1947 Cheval Blanc?

Vintage 2010 was a year of distinctly seasonal weather. Winter was long and rigorous, punctuated by frost and cold waves between Decembe...

Vintage 2010

Drought and cool temperatures contribute to optimal ripeness

The sum of summer temperatures in 2010 was close to that of summer 2009 (962°C compared to 982°C), but decidedly chillier than those of 2005, which totalled 1052°C. These cool temperatures had a substantial influence on the balance of our wines, preserving a good level of acidity and attractive aromatic freshness.

Not especially deep crimson. I think this is TCA-affected unfortunately although the fruit on the front palate – before it all tightens up – is pretty spiffy, with Pierre Lurton’s famous ‘cashmere tannins’. What a shame! This score assumes that the TCA is absent – which is rather difficult to do! It certainly has a lovely texture and real savour. Long.

Wow'ed by Cheval Blanc 2010, Parker had high praise for the Chateau saying that the vintage "is one of the most impressive two-year-old Cheval Blancs [he has] tasted in 34 years in this profession." After barrel tasting in 2011, Parker awarded the wine a 96-98+. A blend of 54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Merlot, Parker lauds the wine's "berry/floral nose with subtle hints of menthol, blueberry, raspberry and flowers in addition to some forest floor and a delicate touch of lead pencil shavings." This wine has incredible aging potential

Ruby. Dense, almost opaque nose at first, needs serious air to open up, rich and lush, exotic, deep. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, spices, layered, rich, intense and deep, spicy, incredible concentration yet nuanced and layered. Extremely long. 99

The 2010 Cheval Blanc gives off notes of violets, roses, cedar, tobacco, spices and blackberries, resulting in a very aromatic wine, with rich, velvety tannins and a density that is prominent on the mid palate and finish. More restrained in style than the 2009, this is a classic, precise wine built to last for many decades. While the 2010 is wonderful I have a slight preference for the 2009, which has more sex appeal, perhaps on account of its much higher Merlot content - 60%, compared with only 44% in 2010.

Good deep colour, vanilla white chocolate, still very primary, with purity and precise red fruits undulating through. Really beautiful expression of perfumed elegance here; on the nose, coconut, the palate is super polished, creamy dense a real blockbuster but so elegant. The alcohol? This is profound, probably the finest I have ever tasted. Very long 98/100

Tasted in April 2014 at the chateau together with Cheval Blanc's technical director, Pierre Olivier Clouet. 2010 was his third vintage he was responsible for. This wine had a great aromatic nose of black cherries mixed with grated Varlhona chocolate, stunning acidity and richness, velvety structure, strong backbone and structure, fat fruit and tannin with perfect ripeness. Incredibly sophisticated wine. Liquid velvet or liquid silk, your choice. Heavenly stuff.

MOGNAD 2025–50.

Robert M. Parker, Jr. 100 Drink: 2023 $959-$2545 (1000)
The 2010 is one of the most impressive two-year-old Cheval Blancs I have tasted in 34 years in this profession. The final blend of 54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Merlot has the tell-tale berry/floral nose with subtle hints of menthol, blueberry, raspberry and flowers in addition to some forest floor and a delicate touch of lead pencil shavings. The wine exhibits more structure and density than it did from barrel, and it was already remarkable then. The foresty/floral notes seem to linger and linger in this surprisingly full-bodied, powerful Cheval Blanc, yet it possesses a very healthy pH that should ensure enormous longevity. Dense purple in color, and a bigger, richer wine than usual, this is one Cheval Blanc that will probably need a decade of cellaring. I like the description from the estate’s administrator, Pierre Lurton, who said it tasted like “liquid cashmere,” a perfect expression, despite the wine’s structure and intensity. This is another 50-year wine from this amazingly structured, rich vintage.
