The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

Wine Information

Chateau Troplong Mondot produced one of the best St. Emilion wines in 2010. However, that year was a much easier vintage for their limestone and clay terroir. Troplong Mondot is a true family managed property: Christine Valette and Xavier Pariente have been on top of things for close to 15 years. Vintage 2011

The 2011 vintage is not easy to handle.

Smith Haut Lafitte not only makes great white and red wine from Bordeaux in Pessac Léognan, they are also at the cutting edge of technology. Fabien Teitgen, long-time general manager, joined us for a long detailed conversation about what happened at Smith Hau...

Written Notes

Superb presentation. Deep and black colour with a violet border. Powerful, winy and classy nose with hints of liquorice, menthol, and black fruit. Concentrated and voluptuous mouth with solid tannins toned up by a nice freshness. Very nice, lively and spiced lenght. A great wine with a high ageing potential.

Blending 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine reached approximately 14.5% alcohol. From yields of 41 hectoliters per hectare, the wine is aged in 85% new oak. Inky in color with blue/purple color in the rim, the wine is plush, rich, round and polished with chocolate-covered boysenberry, caramel, earth, coffee and plummy scents. Filled with sweet, ripe, fresh bitter chocolate and cherries, there is length, purity and polish. 94-96 Pts
