The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

Wine Information

As a reminder, the 2014-2015 campaign started with a cold and dry winter, softer spring temperatures influenced a late bud-break on April 5th. On May 27th, started the flowering which thanks to the idyllic weather in June was quick, full, homogenous and accompanied by 40 mm of rain at the end of the flowering. July was very hot, the rain arrived at a perfect moment for a fast and homogenous veraison which started on July 25th. Slightly lower t...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Written Notes

Expressive, ripe dark plums swathed in aromas of mocha, toasted baking spices, graphite, blackberries and mulberries. The flavor-soaked palate arrives on suave, velvety tannins, delivering flavors of vibrant, concentrated dark plums, mulberries, dark chocolate and cocoa in a youthful, fresh style. Terrific wine with ultra-long finish. An essay in power and elegance. Essence-like. Best from 2020.

I tasted 2015 barrel sample here just before dinner at Les Belles Perdrix de Troplong Mondot. It was a powerhouse of a wine with enorm concentration of fruit and tannin, fatness, chocolate flavor, added extraordinary complexity, depth and length. 96-97p. Degree of alcohol landed at whole 15.5% but I'm not worried. Vines at the property produce usually grapes with high alcohol, it's naturally made and with time it will merge with fruit and tannin, and disappear. We have seen this many times before (in vintages 2000, 2005, 2009 and 2010). Grape varietes in 2015 - 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Opulent red fruit, very delicate and sophisticated. Plenty of dark and red berries, plum and cherry. Very elegant with long finish of dark berries and some dark chocolate. It was unbelievable that the wine reached 15.5% of alcohol as the wine was so smooth and silky. Excellent one! 96-97+

Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Opulent nose with intense ripe fruit aroma, dark chocolate, fresh ground coffee, vanilla, cloves and hints of cinnamon, toasted oak and hints of smoke. On the palate opulent with ripe tannins, excellent length, rich fruit and multi-layered finish.

Deep colour. Fresh intense Dark plum liquorice herb aromas with dark cherry notes. Sweet plummy fruit with ginger oak notes, perfectly ripe tannins and lovely mineral length. Ripe and expressive with an alcoholic kick. 95 points

Troplong Saint Emilion 1er Grand Cu Classe Very deep colour almost black, this has a simply beautiful nose, savoury, perfumed, very pure fruit. The palate is equally impressive, with mocha, voluptuous texture, bright fruits on the finish this is impressive. The structure comes steaming through at the back which is usual for Troplong, not for the faint hearted, but a great choice for the patient. 93-96/100 2030-2050
  • 94p
Deep ruby. Dark fruits, spices, rich, intense, coffee and chocolate nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, ripe, rich, intense, structured, almost massive, concentrated, long. 94-96
