The Story

Southeast of the Mondot hill, overlooking the town of St. Emilion lies Chateau Troplong Mondot. Named for its location and its former proprietor, Gerus Troplong, this estate has been home to viticulture since 1745. Its 33 hectare vineyard is planted to 90% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. "Cold," late-ripening soils produce one of the most dramatic wines of the appellation: an exotic, flashy, modern Saint-Emilion.

Wine Information

A hailed vintage together with 1989. They were very similar but the hot period that hit in 1989 on July was in 1990 on August.
This affected on lower acidity levels in grapes on 1990 vintage. The wines are rounder and seem to mature more rapidly than 1989 vintage.

Vintage 1990

Early, uniform flowering, a hot but unspectacular summer and an exceptionally hot period at the end of August 1990 and the first half of September. Written Notes

Tasted alongside Pichon Longueville 1990, this was a great representative of mature right bank claret from a ripe vintage. Lots of luscious fruit with a strong streak of iron and blood in classic fashion. No excess of extraction, oak or sweetness, this seems to have been made before the winemaking exaggerations of the subsequent decade. Very well balanced and (just) fresh enough but it became just slighlty soupy in the glass. Drink up.

Tasted on the 9th December 2016. This wine was a stunning mouthful with everything in perfect harmony. One of my guests said to me that this wine was disguised as a port. Frankly, I didn’t care because I loved it!

The 1990 Troplong Mondot exhibits a deep, rich, ruby-purple colour, an intense and complex bouquet of black fruit, spices and mineral notes. This wine has concentration and a mix of power, finesse and grace, with enough tannins and backbone to ensure great ageing potential.
Deep ruby. Rich nose of plums, coffee and mocca. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, sweet, warm and ripe fruit, dense and lacks charm.
