The Story

Chambertin – Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. When the ex-Emperor was exiled on St. Helena, he was forced to drink claret, since that was easier to ship to the isolated island.

Written Notes

The 1969 Rousseau Chambertin more than made up for it.  This was a ‘WOW’ wine.  It was fleshy and gamey with a dollop of honey to its sweet, musky nose.  This twist of lemon accentuated its red fruit flavors, and there were nice earth supplements.  Rich and lush, this was a flat out delicious wine, one that is the Burgundy wine of the vintage, for sure (97)

Good looking normal size bottle, in an excellent condition and level is 2cm ullage below the cork. Colour is cherry red, and looking bright, deep and full. On the nose it is intense, open, refined, opulent, seductive and rich. The taste is voluptuous, focused, perfumed, fragrant, with silky tannins, full-bodied, with concentrated and balanced structure. On the palate it is layered and has blackberry, nutty, honey, plum, violet, buttery, toasty, white fruits and chocolate flavours. The finish is long, extensive, flavorful and vibrant. This wine is exotic, sophisticated and masterpiece. I paid around 1k-3k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years and decant at least 45min before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.
