The Story

Chambertin – Domaine Armand Rousseau

Chambertin gained a reputation from the patronage of Napoleon I, who is rumoured not to have drunk anything else and watered down his Chambertin with plenty of water. He favoured it at five to six years old and never drank more than half a bottle with a meal. When the ex-Emperor was exiled on St. Helena, he was forced to drink claret, since that was easier to ship to the isolated island.

Vintage 1983

Burgundy: A difficult vintage: hard, tannic red wines and rich, intense whites.

Warm weather only appeared at the end of May to initiate flowering, although it was still relatively cool. Summer started well until the second week of August when the rain arrived. This wet period continued until September, causing rot problems. The warm, sunny weather that returns in mid-September concentrates the grapes more, but is also very favorable to nob...

Written Notes

Not quite clear. Pretty impressive depth of ruby – doesn't look old at all. Smells pretty old, mind you! Compost. Very firm and upright and concentrated. Just the merest edge of decay with slightly drying tannins. It is certainly concentrated. Dry end with lots of complex fruit beforehand but an insider's wine. Gamey – rather old school – sort of Averys burgundy. Lots of rose petal plus tannin. A very good 1983! Despite this vintage's reputation, there was no sign of rot in this particular 1983. (DRC has installed their sorting table back in 1977 after the dangerously shrivelled berries of 1976, Hanson reminded us.)

1983 Rousseau Chambertin – this is probably not a legendary wine or a top scorer on the vintage charts, however it truly summarizes to me, what great burgundy is all about. At this age the wine still has a fair amount of fruit, structure and bite, combine this with an incredibly seducing perfume that can only emerge with age, every time I put my nose in a great burgundy I’m so fascinated how everything can be hidden in there – earth, mineral, wild berries, roses, and something almost on a sexual level, the scent of a beautiful woman, well, that´s it I suppose, good burgundy reminds me of sex…

Ful colour. Now undue development. Quite spicy on the nose. Medium-full body. Rich, fat and meaty. This is an individual wine with a lot of interest and dimension. Very good grip. Still plenty of vigour.
